DescriptionOil portrait of a lady seen half-length seated on an Empire sofa against a brownish grey background. Sofa is black with brass tacks and carved arm, she rests her right elbow on the arm. White dress, high "empire" waist-line with broad green belt buckled tightly around her narrow waist. Her dress is low on the shoulders with puffs of the sleeves at the shoulders, and tightly fitting long sleeves, with long cuffs falling over her hands. Narrow rose pink shawl with green zigzag border rests across her elbows, simple elegant in pose. Tiny oval pearl pin with red center at bodice, and gold bracelet with red stone on right wrist, and matching long hanging earings. Hair black, parted in center in antique Roman style. Bow in hair. Delicate scalloped lace decorates cuffs and shoulders of sleeves.Label TextThe relaxed pose of this lady and the broad, fluid brustrokes used to define her hair, her costume, and the sofa suggest an artist who had more than a passing acquaintance with academic techniques. Her face is carefully articulated, which contrasts with the economical brushing of other areas of the composition, and the details included in her rose-colored shawl, her green belt, and her jewelry provide interest and compositional unity to the piece.
