DescriptionThis is a large appliquéd quilt consisting of thirty-six blocks on point with half blocks on all four sides. Each full-size block measures approximately 8 ¼” x 8 ¼” and contains the same eight-pointed star (known as Ohio Star), alternating in rows of green or red. The blocks are divided by a 1 5/8” – 1 7/8” printed green sashing. At each intersection of the sashing is a 1 ¾” x 1 ¾” white block. The outer half blocks are edge with piping. The quilt is bordered on three sides with appliquéd green and red swags. There are six different printed green cottons and fourteen printed red cottons in the quilt. The backing is made up of four widths of roller-printed cotton in a red striped pattern. The quilt is edged in a folded red fabric. It is quilted in eight to ten running stitches per inch in parallel lines, leaves, and outline designs. Some of the original pencil marks for quilting are visible in the leaf patterns. Thirteen blocks include stamped inscriptions of at least four different individuals. The second block in from the left on the bottom row is signed in ink: "Maria L. Jones/ Medford/ 1850.”Label TextAlbum quilts made up of individual appliquéd blocks in a red and green color scheme were especially popular in the mid-nineteenth century.
