Label TextDecorative and functional, fire screens were used to ward off drafts or reduce the direct heat from the fire on an individual's face. The height of the needlework screen could be adjusted as necessary. The foliate carving on the legs, which terminates with asymmetrical curves, is consistent with the rococo style in Philadelphia. It was referred to as "leaves on the knees" in a 1772 price book.
