DescriptionThis is a rectangular printed textile fragment of "Peacock in the Ruins" in red on a tan-colored ground. The textile panel depicts a pastoral scene with a seated shepherd playing a flute and a woman spinning with a distaff among broken columns. There are various farm animals at the edge of a stream including a dog, ram, sheep, and cow. Dogs chasing a stag separate this scene from the one below, in which a peacock, hen, rooster, chicks, and ducks are seen near a carved urn on a pedestal and a ruined tomb. The printed pastoral scene does not extend the full width of the textile. The textile has an oval paper label attached at the top that reads: "WILLIAMSBURG / CW / RESTORATION." Penciled on a paper tag stapled to the top: "The [???] / House / [Wa?]quoit / Mass" and on the reverse of the tag: "F.8.#6 / 152552-4 [?] CW / Toile red / Cotton 100% / repeat 77" / Jones Toile / Williamsburg / Restoration / 4.50." There are four color swatches, each measuring 3 3/8 ' x 8 1/4" in grey, blue, purple, and black stitched to the top edge. The panel has selvages at sides and the top and bottom are finished with a zig zag stitch.
InscribedOn one unprinted edge is the printed inscription in red: "ALL VAT COLORS SCHUMACHER'S WILLIAMSBURG "JONES TOILE" and the Williamsburg logo.
