Label TextThis portrait print of Sir Walter Ralegh (Raleigh) (c. 1552/1554- 1618) the explorer, courtier, soldier, and poet who was granted a royal patent to explore Virginia, though he never visited North America. He was instrumental in in nfunding expeditions including the settlement of Roanoke Island. This print was the frontispiece to his life of Sir Oldy's "Life of Sir Walter Ralegh" published in 1735. Maps and books spread out on table in front of him. Banner with slogan AMORE ET VESTUTE across the table.
