DescriptionCandle stand: hexagonal tray with molded edge surmounted by Chinese fretwork gallery with upper molded edge; tray supported on three molded elements which are scrolled at top, clustered together at center, and branch to form Gothic arch which stands on flat, shaped triangular platform with molded lower edge; lower part of pedestal similarly composed but more elaborate in execution with 2 groups of leafage binding columns together at center; pedestal section rests on a triangular platform with fluted edge and carved, free-standing urn at center; carved rocaille decoration on skirt which is supported on three "S" scrolls with molded edges terminating in semi-ovoid foliate feet.Label TextThis pair of mahogany candlestands combines elements of Chinese and Gothic design. The pierced gallery top follows western ideas of Chinese fretwork while the elaborately carved pedestals ending in a scrolled tripod base drips with Gothic ornament. Used to support candelabras, candlestands or torchieres were generally made in pairs or sets. They were placed in between windows or against the wall, adding height to the candlelight and allowing it to spread more evenly across a room.
