DescriptionThis is one of two coordinating bed valances for the top of a tall-post bedstead. The valance is shaped with an undulating bottom edge and a squared projecting "ear" on the right side. The valance is embroidered in multi-colored crewels in colors of green, rose, pink, mauve, gold, yellow, brown, light blue, medium blue, and dark blue on a natural-color plain-woven linen/cotton ground. The floral design consists of scrolling stems with lacy leaves, buds, and flowers, including lilies, tulips, carnations, thistles, and roses. The needlework stitches include chain, satin, stem, herringbone, French knots, buttonhole, long and short, and outline. The valance is unlined and untrimmed (5/8" tape trim was removed prior to acquisition). The raw edges are now finished with later overcast stitches.Label TextThis valance was originally used at the top of a tall-post bedstead to finish off the upper portion and hide curtain rods and other hardware. The lively floral design would have been echoed in the matching bed curtains.
