DescriptionBookrest: center of top carved with crown of England (cross pattys and fleur-de-lys in lower part of crown); surrounded with leafy scrolls which continue down side pieces of back. Background--between leaves-- contains punch-work. In the center of the back is an oval cut-out, inset with cane, which is tightly woven. Spandrels, around oval, carved with stylized flower. Flap integrally hinged to lower portion of back. When open, forms back legs and lip for book to rest on; when closed, it fits flat against body. Back of flap (which forms back legs) is un-carved but scrolled at base and feet to conform to outline of front skirt and feet. Upper part of flap, which protrudes to front of piece (and forms lip for book to rest on), is rectangular in outline, with molded edges. Relief-carved scrolls and leaves adorn lower part of front skirt; conform in outline to cupid's bow cut-out at base. Front feet consist of two lobes which are carved in intaglio scrolls.Label TextAmong the best examples of an exceedingly rare form, this bookrest displays excellent design and high quality carving. Made from a single piece of walnut, it is technically a feat of the carver's art. The hinge does not come apart--both pieces were cut from the solid block.
ProvenanceThe history that accompanies the piece states that the bookrest is "probably from the Chapel Royal and the only recorded example." (Letter from S. W. Wolsey to John M. Graham, II, October 24, 1960.)
