DescriptionLarge dish with raised footring. White tin glaze decorated in blue on the front with a scene of peasants buying and selling produce; on the rim, putti, cherubs, cupids or amorini flying amidst sponged clouds interrupted by satyr masks at the top and bottom; inscribed "P / C S / 1707" on the face of the dish. On the reverse, painted with a pattern of alternating spirals and stylized flowers and inscribed "C P / 1707" within the footring.Label TextFanciful flying and tumbling putti or cherubs encircle the central bucolic scene of peddlers selling produce on the outskirts of a town seen in the distance painted on this large dish. Dishes of this size are rare survivals and this example was probably meant as a display piece. The date on the object most likely commemorates the 1707 marriage of an as of yet identified couple with the initials P / C S, the P being the first initial of their surname. The back bears the same date and the initials C P.
The London attribution for this dish is based on the style of decoration. A posset pot in the City Museum of Liverpool has the same cherubs on the cover and a similar genre scene on the side.
InscribedPainted: "P / C S / 1707" on the face of the dish and "CP / 1707" on the reverse of the dish.
