DescriptionFluted dish with scalloped edge painted with brown line, decorated in the center with a circular reserve outlined with black and red concentric bands- the reserve painted with a riverscape depicting in the foreground a gentleman, a workman, masts of boats, barrels, and trees, and in the background towers, boats, and mountains. Around the rim are four leafy flower sprigs and three small flower heads.Label TextHarbor scenes painted by Herold greatly influenced Chelsea decorators. Although the Chelsea scenes are far less cluttered than the Meissen originals, both have many of the same elements: boats and men working in the foreground, and castellated turrets and church steeples beyond the water in the background. These merely fanciful scenes have been said to represent Chelsea and the Chelsea factory across the Thames, but the statement lacks foundation.
Raised anchor period.
