DescriptionSplat back side chair: Shield back with triple arch top, and molded stiles terminating at point at base; back composed of three, upright splats, the center one pierced and fan shaped at top; the center splat is carved with acanthus leafage near bottom, a cross-hatched block at center and molded fan stiles above; the side splats are plain except for molding on face; the three splats meet at base of back in carved lunette; serpentine shape supports below back on either side connect to rear of seat; narrow area of carved leafage between supports and back; square seat, with bowed, front rail upholstered over seat rail; front legs square in section, tapering to base and terminating in tapering spade feet; front and sides of legs carved with dependent husks on upper portion; rear legs square in section, tapering and flaring to rear.Woods: Primary Mahogany. Secondary: Ash seat rails; white pine front corner blocks; mahogany rear corner blocks; tulip diagonal braces.
Inscribed"J (?) D S" in chalk beneath rear seat rail.
ProvenanceAs this chair is identical in every respect to 1964-257, 1-2, except for minor carving differences on the splat, it most likely has the same history of ownership in the family of Robert Fulton. (For full history, see 1964-257, 1-2.)
