DescriptionOne from a surviving set of eight plates in the Colonial Williamsburg collection.
Label TextWhen Louis G. Myers acquired these plates in Boston, Whitmore had not been identified as an American maker. Myers was able to do so from his knowledge of Whitmore's association with Thomas Danforth II that began in Middletown, Connecticut in the late 1750s. He knew that Danforth died in 1782 with 260 pounds of his molds that were jointly owned with Whitmore. Pieces survive that were cast from the same mold but in some instances are marked by Danforth and in others by Whitmore.

MarkingsTouch mark a rose with crown above framed by “JACOB" and "WHITMORE" within separate curved reserves above and below stamped twice on the underside of each well (Laughlin 383).
