Label TextThe fifth print in William Hogarth's Marriage à la Mode takes place afterr the masquerade (alluded to in plate IV). The Countess and Silvertongue have taken a room at the Turks Head bagnio, their discarded costumes (a nun and a friar) and masks scattered on the floor. The Earl, having followed his wife and her lover, bursts in on them together and a duel between the two men ensues. This plate depicts the outcome – the Earl is mortally wounded and the Countess has fallen on her knees to beg forgiveness. Silvertongue flees half-clothed through the window just as the several men roused by the- commotion enter through the door.
