Label TextPolygonal plates and dishes in pewter, mainly dating from the third quarter of the eighteenth century, clearly derived most directly from and were made to compete with refined earthenware examples. Polygonal pewter ones could not successfully compete with the flood of new lightly potted and gaily decorated ceramic choices.
InscribedUnidentified coat of arms engraved within a rococo cartouche on face of each rim.
MarkingsTouch mark the Prince of Wales feathers with royal crown above framed by "THOMAS" and "CHAMBERLAIN" within curved reserves above and below on underside of each rim (Cotterell 873). Secondary mark a label "CHAMBERLAIN" within an oblong rectangle with beaded upper and lower edges on underside of each rim opposite touch mark (Cotterell 873).
ProvenanceVendor: Christie, Manson & Woods, London, 1972.
