DescriptionThis rectangular coverlet fragment contains the side border of a dark blue, light blue, and red double cloth coverlet. It bears two rows of building, alternating between a Western-style church and house and three Eastern-style pagodas. The pattern is called both “Boston Town” and “Christians and Heathens.” The fragment also contains a portion of the central design, showing peacock-like birds and sprays of leaves and flowers. It is likely from the pattern “Bird of Paradise” or “Birds Feeding Young and Flowerpot.” Along the outer edge is the inscription “PIQUA.” All edges are unfinished.
Label TextThis interesting border is sometimes called “Christians and Heathens,” in reference to the juxtaposition of Western and Eastern architectural styles. It is also called “Boston Town” referencing Boston’s involvement in the China trade.
Markings“PIQUA” repeated along edge
