DescriptionSterling silver candlestick (one from a set of four): Square base formed of four steps supports tapered, fluted column with scrolled Ionic capital beneath a square stepped entablature with tubular candle cup. Removable bobeche with tubular candle socket and square drip pan sized to fit within entablature.
Label TextBased on classical Ionic columns, these candlesticks were a strikingly modern design for 1745/46. Fashioned in the London workshop of Paul de Lamerie, they were commissioned by Sir Kendrick Clayton shortly after he succeeded his late father as the 2nd Baronet Clayton, of Marden, County Surrey. They have been the logo of the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum since its opening in 1985.
InscribedEngraved on lowest step of candlestick base with the coat of arms of Sir Kenrick Clayton, 2nd Baronet of Marden Park, Surry, with the arms of Herring borne in pretense for his wife, Henrietta Maria, eldest daughter and co-heir of Henry Herring, who married in 1736. Also engraved on upper face of each bobeche with the crest of Clayton.

Upper flange of each candle cup and tube of each bobeche engraved with corresponding numbers “I”, “II”, “III”, and “IV”.
MarkingsStruck in relief on edge of candlestick base with 1) lion passant; 2) date letter “k” in a shaped shield for 1745/46; 3) leopard’s head crowned; and 4) sponsor’s mark for Paul de Lamerie of “P•L” in script with a crown above and a large pellet below, all in a shaped shield [Grimwade 1990 # 2204]. Also struck on underside of bobeche with marks # 1 and # 4.
