DescriptionThe lower margin reads: "Thomas Holles Pelham/ Duke of Newcastle, &cc./ Henry Clinton/ Earl of Lincoln, &cc./ G. Kneller Bar.t pinx.t/ J. Faber Fecit 1733."Label TextA double portrait of brother-in-laws Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle (1693-1768) and Henry Clinton, 7th Earl of Lincoln (1684-1728). They were related through marriage when Clinton married Pelham-Holles' sister Hon. Lucy Pelham in 1717. Both men were supposedly members of the Kit-Kat club and hold glasses thought to have been made specifically for the club. The building in the distance represents the Belevedere Tower, a landscape folly designed by fellow KIt-Kat Club member Sir John Vanburgh (see 1979-73) for Newcastle's seat of Claremont, near Esher. The original portrait by Kneller is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery (UK) NPG 3215.
