DescriptionLavender faded to pink silk "lustring" gown with edge-to-edge closed bodice, fitted back of the type called "English back", and open skirt to be drawn up. Bodice front has slightly squared neckline trimmed in gathered and pinked self fabric; bodice closes down center front witout a stomacher. Sleeves are edged in pinked self fabric; sleeves have evidence of original tucks on inside of elbow. Bodice and sleeves lined in linen (somewhat coarser in sleeves). Skirt made of five widths of fabric, seamed at selvages, pleated to bodice in 1/2 inch pleats. Linen tapes inside skirt are tied together for drawing up the skirt.

A linen lining was neatly-sewn into the bodice and sleeves of this gown. The bodice was shaped by the curved side seams and sewn-down back pleats. Stays molded the figure, making bustline darts unnecessary.
The skirt pleats were caught with stitches on the back side to control the fullness. Excess length of the skirt front was folded back at the dip of the waist and pleated, not cut off, a technique that permitted easier alterations in the future.
Pairs of linen tapes tied in a bow draw up the skirt.
