DescriptionSilver monteith punch bowl with removable rim. Broad splayed circular pedestal base with rectangular molding applied at edge supports compressed hemispherical raised body with applied profile molding at rim shaped to form a bayonet fastening for detachable rim (see below). Two cast lion masks on opposite side of body, each with pendant swing handle of articulated bail type.Detachable circular rim with short everted sides and shaped upper edge with six cast and applied satyr's masks with pendant stylized leafage below. Rim fashioned from sheet with single vertical seam behind a mask; a drawn profile molding applied above the lower edge forms a bayonet fastening to body.
Label TextEdward Garlick, Sr., of Bristol, England, purchased this monteith about 1733; by the late 18th century it was owned by his descendants in King and Queen County, Virginia. The coat of arms, engraved on one side of the bowl, features three heads of garlic, a pun on the family's name.
InscribedEngraved within scrolled cartouche with entwined columns (on body opposite engraved coat of arms): "The Gift/OF/Edward Garlick, Senr Esqr/to the Eldest Branch of/His Family". Also engraved on underside of base; "G/E*H" for Edward, Sr. (ca.1675-1740) and Hannah Garlick (d. 1759?) of Bristol

MarkingsFully marked on underside of base: 1) Maker's mark "F·S" with unidentified device below within a heart; 2) Leopard's head crowned; 3) Lion passant; 4) Date letter "s" within a shield for 1733/34. Removable rim unmarked.

By descent to his eldest son, Edward Garlick, Jr (d. 1780)
To his nephew, Camm Garlick (son of Samuel Garlick of Viginia), who was born in Virginia and died in Portugal in 1782.
The monteith then descended through the Garlick family of King and Queen County and King William County until 1981, when it was sold through Christie's by Dr. John Staige Davis IV, a descendant of Samuel Garlick.
