DescriptionAppearance: Late classical side chair; concave tablet-form crest rail with applied half-round molding on reverse at top; concave rectilinear stay rail; turned stiles; T-shaped outer side seat rails; slip seat with rounded front rail upholstered in original red stamped wool moreen; turned legs; turned box stretchers. Painted decoration consisting of gilt stencils with extensive freehand ornamentation on rosewood grained background.Label TextConservators cleaned and stabilized the original red upholstery on this side chair, covering it with a thin mesh fabric to protect the loose threads where the fabric is worn. Because light damages fabrics and paints causing the structure of the fabric to break down over time and the colors of textiles and paint to fade, this chair is only exhibited in low light levels. Note that the original paint on this chair has been stabilized, but the losses have not been filled with new paint.
