Label TextThe recorded title of this work is not specific, but the landscape of towering cliffs and a vigorous waterfall suggests that the scene may be the Winooski River gorge near Essex, Vermont. Marian Southard probably copied a printed view while attending New Hampton Institute in Fairfax, Vermont. Her use of pastels on sandpaper created a stippled texture similar to taht of an engraving.

ProvenanceFound on Long Island, N. Y.; acquired from Edith Gregor Halpert, Downtown Gallery, New York, N.Y., November 17, 1932, and used at Bassett Hall, the Williamsburg home of Mr. & Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Given to C. W. F. in 1979.
