DescriptionMountainous landscape with river rapids at center foreground. Two Indians and fire on left bank.Probably original 1-inch molded and gilded frame.
Label TextThe recorded title of this work is not specific, but the landscape of towering cliffs and a vigorous waterfall suggests that the scene may be the Winooski River gorge near Essex, Vermont. Marian Southard probably copied a printed view while attending New Hampton Institute in Fairfax, Vermont. Her use of pastels on sandpaper created a stippled texture similar to taht of an engraving.
MarkingsAn ink inscription on the verso reads: "M. S. Southard N.H.I./1854 Fairfax, Vt."
