Label TextThese salts have a tradition of Virginia ownership since the eighteenth century. They are believed to have belonged to Major Burr Powell (1768-1839) and his wife, Katharine Brooke (1770-1851), of Middleburg, Virginia. The tradition is uncertain as to whether they descended to the Powells from his parents, Levin Powell (1737-1801) and Sarah Harrison (1746-1790), or from her father, Colonel Humphrey Brooke (1739-1802). They apparently passed to the Powell's daughter, Elizabeth Whiting Powell (1809-1872), and her husband, Robert Young Conrad (1805-1875); to their daughter, Sally Harrison Conrad (1843-1908), and her husband, Dr. Archibald Magill Fauntleroy (1837-1886); to their daughter, Katharine Brooke Fauntleroy (b. 1882), and her husband, Henry Clay Miller; and to their daughter, the donor.

Other London tripod salts in the collection include four of 1734/35 by John Pero (accessions 1967-169, 1-4), a pair of 1739/40 by Edward Wood (1954-567, 1-2), a pair of 1749/50 by William Williams (1953-802, 1-2), and four of 1769/70, probably by Jacob Marsh (1967-613, 1-4).
