DescriptionChild's armchair converted to side chair by the removal of arms and arm supports; serpentine crest rail with slightly voluted ears; tapered stiles with flat face and rounded back; solid, vase shaped splat; separate shoe and rear seat rail; shaped rear seat rail, all others straight; top edge of front seat rail lower than those of side rails to reveal the front edge of slip seat frame; interior of seat frame holds close stool frame; slip seat frame shows evidence of brass nailing along the exposed front edge; rear legs end in embryonic squared pad feet; short cabriole legs in front with pad feet; shaped knee brackets overlap face of seat rails. B is the slip seat.
ProvenanceAccording to the donor, the chair was purchased from the McIllwain brothers of "Little Wales" in Dinwiddie County near Petersburg.
