DescriptionThis small book containing five Old Testament books of the Bible is bound in an embroidered cover. The book is covered in white silk satin with embroidery in silk and couched gilt purl decoration, with pearls. Front cover: Central rose of raised stitching in a cartouche of gold bullion with a crown at top and bottom. The rose and oval decorated with seed pearls. Cartouche is flanked at bottom by a unicorn and a dear (back to back); at top by butterfly and a bird around a caterpillar. Spine: divided into 5 sections set off by seed pearls, containing flowers, insects or fruit. Back cover: bunch of grapes in a cartouche of gold bullion with a crown at top and bottom. The grapes and oval decorated with seed pearls. Cartouche is flanked at bottom by a hare and lion (back to back); at top by a parrot and a butterfly around a caterpillar.Label TextThe embroidered binding of this small book covers THE THIRD PART OF THE BIBLE, printed by Robert Barker, in London in 1614. The five Old Testament books included in the volume are Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon. The format of the cover design--a center oval with corner motifs--is similar to the layout of some larger schoolgirl embroidered pictures.
