DescriptionThis is an almost square sampler stitched with polychrome silk threads on a linen ground. It features a series of 5 alphabets and 2 series of numbers in various stitches. At the end of the final alphabet is "1 (or I or J) R K." The "R K" is probably Rebecca's initials. The alphabets and numerals are followed by an inscription that reads, "Wrought by Rebecca F Knowles Aged 18 Years." This inscription is flanked and underlined by a house with a hipped roof, two chimneys, and pedimented door; two trees; and four pots of flowers. The sampler has a diamond border and is hemmed on all four sides.

Stitches: chain, cross stitch over two, eyelet, satin
Label TextThis sampler was made by 18-year-old Rebecca F. Knowles, likely in northeastern Massachusetts around 1837 or 1838. She stitched five alphabets and two series of numerals of different fonts and sizes. Her inscription, which reads, "Wrought by Rebecca F Knowles Aged 18 Years," is flanked by a house, two trees, and many flowers in baskets. The stitched house is possibly a depiction of Rebecca's own home or the school in which she learned how to stitch. Depicting one's home or school was common on nineteenth-century samplers.
