DescriptionThis is a rectangular panel worked with multicolor crewel wools on a linen twill ground, worked through cotton backing, in a large pattern of flowers and scrolling leaves on a ground of yellow back stitch "quilting".
Label TextAlthough only a fragment of a bed quilt, this needlework is a masterpiece of design and execution. The characteristic English quilting, worked in yellow back stitches, gives a subtle but energetic background to the brilliant scrolling leaves and flowers. The botanical elements twist and turn toward one another in an exuberant, Baroque manner. Worked primarily in "long and short" stitches by professional embroiderers, the crewel wools are placed close to one another to give an expert effect of colors shading from dark to light.
