DescriptionThis is a rectangular pincushion with a silk outer lining, blue and white check linen or cotton inner lining, and two tassels attached to the top corners. One side is decorated with a heart motif which is separated from the signature by five small rosettes. The signature, "ANNA . MARTIN", is in turn centered over a larger rosette. On the other side in top center is a swirling star motif. Below this is "PHILAD ELPHIA/ DECEMBER/ 26' 1787". Between the letters "D" and "E" of "Philadelphia" is a flower worked in silk embellishment threads. All of the designs, except the embroidered flower are worked in steel wrapped-headed pins.Label TextThis pincushion was probably made as a presentation gift for Anna Martin on the event of her birth, marriage, or other important occasion. The date may correspond to this event or be the date when the pincushion was completed. The heart and star motifs are indicative of Pennsylvania German influence.
