DescriptionSoft-paste porcelain press-molded soup plate with lobed rim. The ledge has a blue ground and then has gilt stars, dots, stylized flowers and spider webs. There is a line of gilding on the edge of the plate and at the top of the cavetto. There is a central monochromatic medallion painted in shades of gray on the dish, encircled in an elaborate, gilt frame. The medallion depicts a woman standing contrapposto in long neoclassical style robes, identified as "Hope." She rests her left hand on the corner of a wall and tilts her head up to gaze off to her left with a slight smile. With her right hand, Hope grasps an anchor leaning against her hip. In the distance, a ship floats on a wavy sea under a clouded sky. Label TextThis is part of the service made for the Duke of Clarence in 1792 and decorated by John Pennington.
MarkingsFlight mark in blue on reverse, consisting of a jeweled crown over "Flight" written in script with an sideways crescent moon below it.
