Williams portrayed several members of the Vanderveer family. In 1931, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller acquired this portrait along with one of a man (accession no. 1931.200.3), which was then thought to represent her husband but is now considered more likely a likeness of her son, John G. Vanderveer (1799-1883).
