DescriptionChinese porcelain plate decorated in underglaze blue. Central motif of peony blossoms. A star diaper and chrysanthemum band interrupted by reserves of flower sprigs rims the cavetto. The edge of the plate is bordered by a stylized band of prunus, peony, and other whole and demi-flowers. The plate rim is edged in brown.Label TextThe decoration on this plate is typical of porcelain documented archaeologically in Williamsburg. The use of a central floral motif with elaborate borders was popular on Chinese export porcelain in the middle of the 18th century. This plate is one of a pair said to have belonged to the Reynolds family, who brought them to Virginia in 1770.
ProvenanceFrom the collection of Mrs. James Gambrill who received it from the collection of her first husband Cyrus Hankins. According to family history they were brought to Virginia by the Reynolds family in 1770.
