DescriptionCarved from a solid block of wood, this box in the form of a book has a "cover" attached with a tinplate hinge. It features carvings of a rampant lion surrounded by a scalloped border on one side, and a profile of a woman surrounded by flowers on the other.

It features carvings of a rampant lion surrounded by a scalloped border on one side and a profile of a woman surrounded by flowers on the other. Handmade, decorative and practical, such gifts remain popular, extending a common practice from the nineteenth century to the twentieth.


Inscribed"K. G. Catton to/E. A. Cassidy 1930/T. F. Dyer Some/Day/Remember me." is written in pencil on the underside of the lid; "T. F. Dyer/My Beneficiary." is written in pencil inside the box.
