Along the base of the engraving reads: "T. Clarke Sculpt: 1801 Boston." Beneath it bears the title.
Label TextThomas Clarke's memorial to Washington was one of the earliest engravings published in response to the first President's death. The classical design of the tomb and the figure of Hope with her raised arm and anchor became a popular feature in commemorative art of the period.
