DescriptionA three-quarter length portrait of a man shown standing and turned a quarter towards the viewer's left, his head turned to the viewer. His proper right arm is slightly raised from vertical, and with the index finger of that hang, he points toward something outside the composition. His proper left forearm is raised at nearly a right angle to his upper arm, his gloved hand holding his empty glove just above his waistline. He wears a brown coat and waistcoat with a white shirt and a white, falling neckband that terminates in lace. His long brown hair hangs loose, curling slightly, to his shoulders. A dark diagonal fills the lower left corner with, above it, pink billowing clouds. A simple brown drape appears at upper right.

The 3-inch molded, black-painted frame is a modern replacement.
Label TextPieter Waldron was the son of William and Engelita Stoutenburgh Waldron of New York City and was baptized there in June 1675. He married Tryntie Cornelia Danburgh on September 6, 1698, and in 1700 they moved to Albany, where he died May 3, 1725.

Like CWF acc. nos. 1964.100.2 and 1964.100.3, this portrait is attributed to the Schuyler Limner on the basis of its close stylistic relationship to other works ascribed to the artist. Waldron's pose and costume are quite similar to Robert Sanders's (1964.100.3), though the brown tones used here are far more subdued and thus perhaps less appealing. The artist's characteristic use of lively pinks and siennas for flesh tones is very evident in Waldron's face and right hand.
InscribedA painted inscription in the lower left corner reads "Etas Sue/46/1720" [i.e., aged 46].
