DescriptionFan or hand screen of printed paper and painted silk with a wooden handle. Blade shaped like palm leaf with palm stem handle. Obverse: engraving of lady in plum colored dress, green kerchief, and a green hat, standing between a small dog and a treasure chest. A mansion house and landscape appear in the background. The woman stands under an open compass with the inscriptions: "Fear God," "Know Thyself," "Bridle Thy Will," "Remember Thy End." The border has an inscription: "Keep within compass and you will be sure to avoid any troubles which others endure." The reverse is of white silk painted with crossed gold sword in festoon of leaves and red roses.Construction History
