DescriptionThis is a framed needlework picture worked in faded shades of tan, blue, green, white, and pink wool embroidery threads on a linen ground. Just right of center are two women seated beneath a large tree; musicians sit to their right playing flute and bagpipe while another lady dances in left foreground. A herd of sheep, a cow, a dog, and several rabbits are strewn throughout the landscape. A shepherd sleeps at left foreground. In background is a house with smoking chimneys. An illegible name and the date "1763" occupy the center bottom of the picture.
The embroidery is framed in a molded period frame of painted black wood and enhanced with carved and gilt spandrel and carved and gilt floral designs at corners and center of each side.

Label TextPastoral scenes were popular subjects for needlework pictures in England and America during the eighteenth century. They reached the height of their popularity during the mid-eighteenth century, around the time this needlework picture was completed.
