Label TextIn response to the huge amount of silver the Spanish found in their newly conquered territories, a mint at Mexico City began striking coins in 1536. It is still doing so today. Those with Gothic lettering, like this silver 2 reales, were their earliest issues, and were produced under the watchful eye of Assayer Rincon during the joint reign of Carlos & Johanna. Therefore, it can be said that these coins were the first made in the New World.
