DescriptionSlightly ovoid-shaped jug composed of red stoneware clay with narrow, tall neck and strap handle. Handle terminates in four finger impressions over three. A face applied to the side of the thrown jug, opposite the handle, consists of ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. The eyes are composed of unglazed porcelain clay with glazed pupils and raised crinkled clay around the perimeter of the eyes. The mouth gapes open with two teeth visible inside. The entire jug (aside from the eyes) is covered in a dark black metallic slip.MarkingsThe numeral 4 inside a circle incised on the base into wet clay. This mark indicates that it was the fourth wood kiln firing and therefore dates this piece to 1987.
