DescriptionThis is an almost square needlework sampler worked in faded shades of green, yellow, cream, pink, and brown silk threads on a natural color linen ground. It has selvages at sides and a 1 /4' hem at top and bottom. Centered in the top two thirds of the sampler is a large pattern-woven basket with handle. Flowers, leaves, and vines spring from the basket. The basket is flanked by sprays of flowers (possibly rosebuds). Below basket is the verse: "Lord bless Thy peple [sic] [who to the]/ Do [a]ll Their safety owe/ Feed [thou] thy flock and raise them/ Up when they are fallen low." Below verse is the signature line "Maria [S] etten Aged 10." There is a large spray of roses in each of the bottom corners. The sampler is enclosed in a border of undulating vine of berries and leaves.
