DescriptionOval teapot with lobed vertical sections around the lower body, supported on oval stepped base; chased to create band around upper body which is engraved with wheel and basket motif; high inset shoulder; lid rises to high dome; with cast urn finial. S-curve spout with split lip, and applied leaf on top; wooden handle with thumb grip, set in socketsLabel TextThis teapot bears the marks of two Baltimore silversmiths. It was made in the shop of Baltimore silversmith Charles L. Boehme (1774-1868), but his mark is over stuck three times with the mark used by Robert Monteith (active 1814-1849). Additionally, the teapot is stamped with the word “Sterling.” Robert Monteith was among the Maryland silversmiths who, in 1814, protested the establishment of an assay office in Baltimore.
MarkingsMarked in relief on edge of base: “C.L. BOEHME” in a rectangle. This mark is overstruck three times with “RM” in relief in a rectangle; also marked in relief in semi-script “Sterling” in a conforming reserve
