DescriptionThis is a portion of a roof gutter from the c.1715-18, M-shaped roof that partially survives inside the attic space formed by the addition of the 1750s roof on the Peyton Randolph House. Hand-hewn from an oak log, it has a U-shaped rain channel centered along its length to carry rain water off the center of the roof. It has a non-hewn, closed end which is cut on diagonals and there is a hand-chiseled mortise cut through one side for insertion of a rain leader that brought the water down into the gutter. The channel and vertical surfaces have surviving 18th century pine tar waterproofing residue.
Label TextThis circa 1715 oak gutter section from the Peyton Randolph House has remnants of the early tar used to waterproof the wood.
