DescriptionLarge globular tyg with short, nearly cylindrical neck. Handles trailed with cream colored slip in typical Wrotham stitched pattern on red body. Neck features a series of double concentric arches trailed in cream colored slip. On shoulder vessel is inscribed "1709" surrounded by a border of slip dots. Also on shoulder is a series of wavy lines and commas in an abstract pattern. Between the handles are the initials "IE." On lower belly "WROTHAM" is followed by zigzag lines and dots. All but base coated with yellow lead glaze.
Label TextThis unusual two-handled tyg, typical of later Wrotham wares, has trailed slip decoration only. It is dated 1709 and bears between the two handles the initials "IE," possibly for the potter John Eaglestone. The cup's place of origin, "WROTHAM," is inscribed around the foot. Other examples of this general form of tyg with the initials "IE" date from around 1690 to 1710.
