DescriptionOblong slipware-trailed dish; large press molded dish of oblong shape and dark red clay body; dish has flat bottom with steeply angled flaring walls; slip trailing of gradually larger cream colored commas on walls form frond patterns; large single frond on center of bottom of dish; entire interior and part of exterior (down to about two inches below rim) coated with thick lead glaze.
Label TextThis large press-molded dish, with decoration trailed in cream directly onto the brown body clay, is a type produced in some quantity around Newcastle upon Tyne, formerly in Northumberland. It probably dates to the first half of the nineteenth century, although some examples also were produced there in the late eighteenth century.
