DescriptionShallow plate without a foot ring. Bluish tin glaze decorated predominately in blue with a half-length portrait of Queen Anne surrounded by concentric bands and a border of intertwined scallops. Dress bright yellow, stomacher, necklace, and crown in red, and top of curtains in mixed green. Inscribed "AR."
Label TextThe ermine-like rim decoration seen on this delft plate is found on similar plates decorated with the initials and portrait of George I. Fragments with this border have been excavated at Limekiln Lane in Bristol and from a plate painted in blue with a peacock at an unrecorded site in Williamsburg (99Z-0336). Two delft mugs relating to Anne that date from the 1720s are inscribed "To the Pious Memory of Good Queen Ann," as are a number of brown salt-glazed mugs. It is not inconceivable that these plates also postdate Anne's reign. The Bristol attribution is based on the shape of the plate.
