DescriptionStraight-sided round bowl with two rows of indentations on sides and cylindrical foot ring; flat lyre-shaped handle with S-scroll brackets. White tin glaze decorated in blue, manganese, yellow, and orange with a full length portrait of Charles I, wearing royal robes and holdimg a replica of a church and inscribed CIR. Handle outlined and the inscription "E / R I / 1660" on the bottom in blue.
Label TextThis Charles I commemorative porringer is dated the year his son, Charles II, came to the throne. It shows details of the columned arch that appears on chargers bearing Charles I's image (such as CWF accession 1968-104). The depiction of a king holding a replica of a church, perhaps symbolizing his role as "defender of the faith," has been used since medieval times. This porringer, probably intended for display, has a very unusual handle. The London attribution is based on the glaze, the early date, and the subject matter.
