DescriptionGlobular jug with short cylindrical neck, S-shaped tubular spout attached to side, and loop handle. White tin glaze decorated in blue; on one side, a seated man preaching; on the other, a figure, possibly a pilgrim, with a staff.Label TextIt has been speculated that the scenes on this jug represent Saint Francis of Assisi and Elijah with the Ravens, given that so much of the decoration on pieces of this period, if not chinoiserie, was religious in concept. It has also been suggested that the decoration was done by the painter of a privately owned mug inscribed "Thomas Balard 1644," which is attributed to Christian Wilhelm's factory in Southwark, near London. It might just as easily have been painted by the same person who decorated a jar dated 1658 in the collections of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. In spite of its similarity in decoration to English pieces, however, the form and the body color suggest a possible Continental attribution.
