DescriptionTwo-handled cup. Inscribed on one side "H. Davis won by Ball" and scratched on the other side "J M Taylor." Possibly made by a member of the Baldwin family of Wigan, England.
Label TextThe face of this cup is engraved "H:Davis / won By / Ball," indicating that it was originally presented as a horseracing trophy.

Another cup by the same maker, although with broken scroll handles, is in the collections of The Worshipful Company of Pewterers of London. Both cups clearly bear the same pseudo hallmarks and other ambiguous marks.
Inscribed"H:Davis / won By / Ball" engraved on face of body within a wriggle-engraved cartouche. A castle flanked by trees with "J M TAYLOR" above later engraved on opposite side of body below pseudo hallmarks.
MarkingsPseudo hallmarks (1 and 3) buckle and (2 and 4) horse's or unicorn's head erased within indistinct reserves centered between handles on face of body. Indistinct mark centered in pseudo hallmarks and placed slightly above
