DescriptionSide chair with serpentine cresting rail with scrolls on either side of central, carved and gilded shell with dependant husk; shaped, serpentine stiles; stiles and cresting rail gilded and japanned with foliate and geometric motifs; back composed of central, vase-shaped splat, japanned animals below; splat outlined with gilding; area between splat and stiles filled in with caning; splat mortised into arched, gilded and carved shoe with central flower; shaped, balloon seat, slightly indented at front, the central part fitted with caning, surrounded by a plain, black frame; skirts japanned with floral and geometric motifs, with a large, gilt and carved shell dependent at center of front seat rail; cabriole front legs terminating in claw and ball feet; each leg has a carved, gilt shell on knee with gilt, carved foliage above molded, gilt C-scrolls, on brackets on either side of knees; below knees are a series of gilt, carved husks; japanned, geometric designs surrounding carved elements; rear legs square in section, flaring to rear, ending in hoof feet; serpentine medial stretcher, carved and gilded on upper surface; baluster side and rear stretchers; {Note: the scenes on the splats of the chairs (set of six) are all different, but of the same general design}
