DescriptionThis rectangular blue and white double-cloth coverlet has a central design featuring a grid of strong horizontal and vertical bars enclosing medallions of diamonds, eagles, and stars alternating with floral and leaf medallions. The side borders have a design of alternating large and small trees, and the bottom border has a design of large trees and spots. An outlined standing lion fills the two bottom corner blocks. The coverlet is made of two panels seamed vertically down the center. The sides are selvedges, and the top and bottom edges are hemmed.
Label TextThe weaver of this distinctive group of “Big Lion” coverlets is unknown. Although many associate lions with the work of Harry Tyler, this coverlet differs significantly from Tyler’s work. The corner block is a large lion outlined in the color of the reverse side and turned 90 degrees. When draped over the sides of a bed, the lion corner blocks would stand in correct orientation.
MarkingsNot signed. Standing lion turned 90 degrees or sideways in corner block.
