DescriptionThis is a doublecloth woven coverlet of indigo wool and natural-color cotton. The coverlet is woven in two panels with a hand-stitched center seam. Selvages form the side edge finish; narrow rolled hems finish the top and bottom. The design consists of a centerfield of sixteen 8-lobed medallions in two different designs, alternating by rows. Fillings consist of symmetrical floral cornucopia and flowers. The side borders consist of dense floral elements. Top and bottom borders have single medallions set within rectangles alternating with bands of dense floral designs that are related to side borders. There are four corner blocks with a 3-lobe medallion in each and the letters and date "A. D. 1837" mirrored. The lower right cinderblock has the words "LOUISA J./PEIRSON."
Markings"A. D. 1837" repeated and mirrored in all four corners; "LOUISA J./PEIRSON" in lower right corner (as seen with light ground side up).
ProvenanceThe coverlet descended through the donor's first husband's family. The coverlet was made for Louisa J. Peirson who was the second wife of Artemas William Hyde. She lived in Hydesville, Wayne County, New York.
