DescriptionAppearance: Splat back side chair with arched crest rail; serpentine stiles; pierced vasiform splat with carved urn in center flanked by serpentine uprights, the outer two terminating in rosettes at top; "square" seat upholstered over the rails; row of brass tacks at base; back legs square in section; "kick out" at rear; front legs plain, square in section, and tapering; side, rear, and medial stretchers rectangular and plain.

Woods: Mahogany with maple seat rails and white pine corner braces.
Label TextThis side chair in the early classical style features an urn carved into the splat, tapered front legs, and swags of decorative brass nails around the seat. Chairs of this design were produced in Rhode Island and around Hartford, Connecticut. The Rhode Island examples have been attributed to a handful of Providence cabinetmakers and may represent the work of a few shops.
